With a mandatory challenger defined, WBC flyweight world champion Julio Cesar Martinez (17-1, 13 KOs) is ready to take his career to the next level.
Under the tutelage of his promoter, the Guadalajara trainer Eddy Reynoso, Martinez assured that he hopes to secure the best possible fights, despite the obstacles that other champions have put in order to face him.
Last week, the World Boxing Council ordered Martinez to make a mandatory defense against McWilliams Arroyo of Puerto Rico.
Their fight was scheduled to take place last fall, but it was delayed when the champion fell ill and withdrew.
In December, Martinez once again fell ill and he was unable to move forward with a planned defense on the undercard to Canelo Alvarez vs. Callum Smith.
Martinez was in action back in October, when he blasted out Moises Calleros in two rounds.
“I’m ready to come back, to defend the title. I want to make history, and although there are plans to move up to the next weight division, I first I want to unify my titles. We want the best, God first, to show what we are made of,” Martinez said to Erika Montoya.
According to Martinez, he was attempting to get fights with two of the world champions – but he claims they wanted too much time to prepare for the fight.
“We were already negotiating with Artem Dalakian and with the African (Moruti Mthalane) but they asked for four or five months of preparation and I like to fight often and not sit around. I also want to defend my belt… We are waiting to see who raises their hand to unify. Right now we are going forward with everything, except with fear, and we are very motivated… this is just the beginning, it is the first seed to making history,” Martinez said.
