Former world champion Patrick Teixeira of Brazil is ready to collide with Magomed Kurbanov of Russia in a fight for the WBO International title in February 2022, according to a rep for promoter RCC Boxing Promotions.

The fight, which was supposed to take place this past Saturday in Yekaterinburg, was called off at the late hour due to health problems on the part of the Russian boxer.

“The representatives of Teixeira do not object to the fight being held in February of next year. There are details that we need to discuss. Will the fight take place in Russia? The question is still open,” a rep for RCC Boxing told Oleg Bogatov.

It was an unexpected occurrence when Kurbanov felt sick on Saturday morning, only hours before the fighters were scheduled to enter the ring in Yekaterinburg, but the decision to withdraw was actually made during the live card when both boxers were in their respective dressing rooms backstage.

The Russian boxer’s temperature was running high just two hours before the fight. The boxer’s team, together with doctors, organizers and promoters, decided not to risk the athlete’s health.

Kurbanov (22-0, 13 KOs) was in the ring back in May, when he picked up a close twelve round decision win over former junior middleweight world champion Liam Smith.

For his part, Teixeira (31-2, 22 KOs) saw action in February when he lost his WBO junior middleweight title to Brian Castano.

The winner of Kurbanov vs. Teixeria will take a big step forward to a potential world title shot.
