White on De La Hoya’s comeback: ‘Cocaine isn’t cheap’

The boxing comeback of 47-year-old Hall of Famer Oscar De La Hoya has been a big topic of discussion in the sport lately, so after a UFC show, Oscar’s media rival Dana White was asked about the news, which was clearly meant to set White up to say something petty or controversial.

He delivered.

“Cocaine isn’t cheap,” White said, referencing De La Hoya’s well-known and admitted history of substance abuse issues. “It’s expensive. Gotta make money.”

De La Hoya hasn’t fought since his Dec. 2008 loss to Manny Pacquiao, and there is plenty of concern about him returning after 12 years out of the ring, at 47 years of age, as diminished as he was looking by the end of his active career. There’s also no guarantee it will happen, as De La Hoya will have to pass a physical and get re-licensed and all that.

De La Hoya and White have had a long run of back-and-forth trash talk at this point, and it’s not a stretch to say the two genuinely despise one another. It’s not like they’re making money from taking shots, this hasn’t set up a fight or promotion or anything. They just truly do not like each other, and that doesn’t seem like it’s going to change any time soon.
