At Matchroom’s Fight Camp in Brentwood, former WBA world champion Alexander Povetkin (36-2-1, 25 KOs) turned back the clock and blasted Dillian Whyte (27-2, 18 KOs) out cold to capture the Interim WBC heavyweight world title. (photos by Mark Robinson)
Povetkin derailed Whyte’s plans as the mandatory challenger to full WBC champion Tyson Fury.
Whyte had the edge in the early rounds, making Povetkin miss and then digging hard to the body. During their trades in the fourth round, Povetkin went down from a left hook. It was more of a flash, with Whyte taking his time and boxing. Then he dropped Povetkin for a second time with an uppercut.
In the next round, the fifth, Povetkin knocked Whyte out cold with a huge left uppercut. Whyte fell down and out, with the referee quickly waving off the fight.
