Hearn: Fury must face Whyte, no way around it

Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn emphatically states that Dillian Whyte will finally have his time to shine in 2021, when he’s expected to finally get his mandatory title shot at the bet currently held by Tyson Fury.

The WBC ordered Whyte to get his shot by February, but with the way this pandemic has been making it difficult to stage fights, that could prove difficult if Fury’s contracted rematch with Deontay Wilder isn’t held by the end of the year. Be that as it may, Hearn says the WBC has made their intentions known.

“The WBC have made it clear that the fight has to happen, subject to Whyte beating Alexander Povetkin next week,” his promoter Hearn told Sky Sports.

That fight certainly isn’t a gimme for Whyte, and he could well be risking the title shot he’s worked so hard for. But assuming Whyte does get the win in that outing, there should be a clear and direct path to the championship title — at least in theory.

“It doesn’t appear to me that there is a way around [Fury vs Whyte] not happening,” Hearn said. “Other than a ‘step-aside’ to Whyte, which I can tell you has absolutely no chance of happening. Or Fury vacating the WBC title which we don’t want to happen either.”

Hearn would continue by saying that he’d hate to see Fury vacate the WBC title before he presumably heads into a showdown against Anthony Joshua, because then that fight would no longer be for the undisputed title. Fury, though, is a bit of an enigma, and has made it clear that he’s no longer defined by any belt around his waist. But should everything pan out the way Hearn would like, Whyte will get his shot at the belt early next year which would still leave time to make a presumptive Fury-Joshua unification next summer.
