Garcia and Campbell avoid second purse bid, target November in U.S.

Fighting

Last week, Eddie Hearn and Golden Boy’s Eric Gomez avoided a WBC purse bid by announcing that they’d reached an “agreement in principle” for Ryan Garcia vs. Luke Campbell. They requested a weeklong extension to hammer out the final details, and with the bid once again looming, today announced that they’d struck a deal to stage the fight stateside in November.

Though they currently lack a specific date or location, Hearn reiterated that it would take place near the middle or end of the month.

It’s not surprising that Garcia (20-0, 17 KO) gets the home-field advantage; the 22-year-old is a bona fide social media sensation, and while Olympic gold medalist Campbell (20-3, 16 KO) is plenty beloved across the pond, he’s not likely to sell as many tickets.

That is, of course, assuming that there are tickets to sell. America has badly bungled its coronavirus response to the point where expecting live audiences within three months is terribly optimistic. We’ll see how this plays out.
