Wild Card Boxing Club, Hollywood, California – In a battle of undefeated super welterweights, Charles Conwell (14-0, 11 KOs) broke down and stopped Madiyar Ashkeyev (14-1, 7 KOs) in nine rounds.
It was a solid first for both, with Conwell landing the better looking shots and Ashkeyev doing good work while staying on the move. In the second, Ashkeyev was being very physical, keeping things close and looking to bully Conwell, who was letting his hands go to the body to slow Ashkeyev down.
Conwell was peppering Ashkeyev on the inside for most of the third. After Conwell controlled the fourth, Ashkeyev tried to rally with an inside fight in the fifth. Conwell was outworking and outlanding Ashkeyev in the sixth and seventh, especially with hard shots to the body.
Ashkeyev was starting to take a lot of punishment in the eight, as Conwell was laying in the hard shots. The same punishment continued in the ninth – and Ashkeyev’s trainer stopped the fight when he came back to the corner.
