Zanfer Promotions CEO Fernando Beltran, who co-promotes undefeated middleweight contender Jaime Munguia (36-0, 29 KO’s), says their desire to make a fight with IBF champion Gennady Golovkin (41-1-1, 36 KO’s) is very real.
Beltran has confirmed that both camps have been in talks about the fight, but refused to place a percentage on the probability of the contest actually coming off.
“We are in talks. I wouldn’t dare say that they are very advanced,” said Beltran to Marcos Romero. “I don’t want the other side to take me the wrong way if I speak of a high percentage [of the fight actually happening], because that can work against me in any negotiation.”
In the next few days, Beltran is hoping to get a clear idea on whether or not Golovkin vs. Munguia can happen next or at all in 2021.
“The decision does have to be made in the next few days, because we also have to make plans in case the fight does take place, we have to make a lot of plans; in order to continue with the progression of [Munguia’s career],” Beltran indicated.
Golden Boy Promotions, who co-promote Munguia with Beltran, would like to stage the Golovkin fight on Cinco De Mayo weekend.
Beltran, however, is not looking to create a conflict – because Mexican superstar Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez is planning to fight on May 8th.
“Let’s see what happens. We know that the champion, Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, also fights on those [Mexican] dates. The idea is not to have a conflict with dates. Not having two presentations [on the same day], but separate presentations. Saul is the best fighter, the one that people are following, whom we respect and admire. Honestly, what we are looking for is a date to shine with our own result,” Beltran concluded.
Munguia has had two fights in the middleweight division. In 2020, he officially moved up to the weight class after capturing the WBO 154-pound championship and making five successful defenses.
