John Dennen considers the must-watch fights coming up this month

GIVEN the rapid spread of coronavirus, it’s no wonder, of course, that the boxing year got off to a slow start in January of 2021. But February will see a host of boxing shows in the UK and America and there are several richly appealing fights. We consider the three not to miss below:

1. Miguel Berchelt vs Oscar Valdez
February 20, Las Vegas
A thrilling all-Mexican showdown for the WBC super-featherweight title promises to be an action-packed clash of styles. Berchelt hasn’t been taken the distance since a 2017 title defence, while Valdez’s form can be mixed but as an aggressive volume-puncher his fights are always good to watch.

2. Josh Kelly vs David Avanesyan
February 20, London
Kelly is a flashy, skillful Olympian who takes another step up against hard-hitting David Avanesyan for the European welterweight title. Avanesyan smashed the previously formidable Kerman Lejarraga in Spain in 2019. Neither was able to box in 2020 but finally, after multiple cancellations, this much-anticipated showdown is on.

3. Carl Frampton vs Jamel Herring
February 27, TBC
A bout of historic significance as Carl Frampton, the Belfast star, looks to enhance his legacy and become a three-world champion. Against Jamel Herring he is pushing up against the limits of what’s physically possible for him. Herring is not only a good WBO champion, he’s a very big super-featherweight too. Can Frampton outbox him? Is Herring too rangy and too strong for him? We will find out at the end of the month.
