Mikaela Mayer may have her next fight lined up, as the WBO junior lightweight titleholder posted on social media that she’s returning June 19, with an “opponent in the works.”
Mayer (14-0, 5 KO) got two fights in during Top Rank’s “bubble” run in Las Vegas last year, beating Helen Joseph in July, and then taking the WBO belt in October against Ewa Brodnicka. Neither fight was competitive, really, with Mayer dominating over the 10-round distance both times.
The 30-year-old Mayer has stated repeatedly that she wants to unify with the other titlists at 130 pounds. In January, she sounded confident that IBF titlist Maiva Hamadouche was the most likely of the other three to fight her next, and that if she couldn’t get one of the titleholders for unification, she wanted to fight a top American, naming Heather Hardy as a particular idea.
If Mayer can’t get a titleholder or someone like Hardy, it’s really anyone’s guess, but Mayer will be getting back in the ring in the spring/early summer/whatever you want to call mid-June.
