Wilder vs. Whyte Final Eliminator Scenario is Embraced By WBC Prez

World Boxing Council President Mauricio Sulaiman has embraced the idea of sanctioning a final eliminator between highly ranked heavyweight contenders Deontay Wilder and Dillian Whyte.

Wilder, a former WBC world champion, is ranked at number one. Whyte is sitting in the sixth ranked position.

Before that can happen, Whyte will have to win his upcoming rematch with WBC interim-champion Alexander Povetkin on March 27.

Back in August of 2020, Povetkin scored a brutal fifth round knockout of Whyte.

Wilder has been out of the ring since getting stopped in the seventh round by Tyson Fury in February of last year.

At the moment there is no word on when Wilder intends to fight again.

If everything falls into place, Sulaiman likes the idea of seeing Wilder and Whyte trade punches in a high-stakes fight.

“Yes, absolutely. Yes, I like the idea. Of course the rankings are by merit. We’ll see what happens on March 27. If Whyte wins, then he becomes the interim champion. He would be in a very privileged position and it’s just a good time for boxing,” Sulaiman told Sky Sports.

Eddie Hearn, who promotes Whyte, is a very big fan of matching his boxer against Wilder.

Whyte and Wilder are far from friends. The two fighters have been trading words for the last few years.

If Whyte comes away with a win next Saturday night, Hearn would certainly pursue the scenario of a Wilder showdown.

“I love the Deontay Wilder fight,” Hearn previously told Sky Sports.

“Wilder against Whyte is a fight we’ve talked about a long time. Dillian Whyte called for that fight for about three years and then all of a sudden Deontay Wilder lost, now he’s calling for the Dillian Whyte fight.”
