August 14th is the date that WBO bantamweight champion John Riel Casimero (30-4) and WBA world bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux will collide. The fight will headline a Showtime Championship Boxing telecast.
Casimero will enter the fight riding a six fight win streak. He is undefeated since dropping a unanimous decision to Jonas Sultan in September, 2017.
His last two fights have ended with third round knockout victories over Duke Micah and Zolani Tete. They also were his first two fights working under the guidance of top strength and conditioning coach Angel “Memo” Hereida.
Heredia expects Rigondeaux, a two-time Olympic gold medalist, to prove to be a tough challenge for his charge but is very confident that his man will come out with the victory.
Casimero’s power is evident by his 21 victories by knockout but Heredia believes that his strength training will make the Filipino even more powerful.
“It is going to be nice to be back with Casimero for the third time. It is going to be a big fight. Obviously it isn’t going to be an easy fight when you fight a guy with experience and good technique like Rigondeaux – it is going to be a hard fight. I truly believe that the power in Casimero is now stronger. I am looking forward to starting camp on June 1st. This is our third camp and we will be working on adding even more power and speed. He has already started doing a pre-camp in the Philippines,” Heredia told BoxingScene.com.
The 40-year-old Rigondeaux has campaigned a super bantamweight for the majority of his career. He dropped down to bantamweight in his most recent fight when he defeated Liborio Solis by split decision to capture the vacant WBA world bantamweight title. He has now won three fights in a row since his only career loss which came against Vasiliy Lomachenko in a super featherweight bout.
