We’ve already seen at least one big unification bout crumble before our very eyes this year between heavyweights Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua, and we just might see another disappear as RingTV reports that talks to stage a 168-pound fight between Canelo Alvarez and Caleb Plant have hit a snag.
According to their sources and Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn, PBC are interested in having Canelo make a multi-fight commitment to fight on their platform in order to make the Plant bout as mentioned by Hearn during a DAZN boxing show.
“[PBC] would prefer to do a three-fight deal, obviously, with Canelo Alvarez,” he stated. “This is their opportunity to try and allure him to the network. “I feel like Caleb Plant shouldn’t be a pawn in this. Caleb Plant is a guy that should get the best deal and the best opportunity for this fight, but unfortunately that’s boxing, but we’ll see where it goes.”
Because September is just around the corner, Hearn also admits that there’s no much time for them to nail down Canelo’s next fight, saying they must make a decision this week on who Canelo will be facing next with several other options on the table. And one of those fights could just be — wait for it — a third bout against Gennadiy Golovkin.
