BBBofC orders McGregor-Farooq rematch

The British Boxing Board of Control (BBBofC) has released the latest update on its myriad English and British titles, revealing a number of intriguing tidbits.

We’ll go by weight in descending order, focusing on the new stuff.

Up at light heavyweight, the Board has ordered former titlist Hosea Burton (26-2, 12 KO) to meet unbeaten English champ Danny Azeez (13-0, 8 KO). Burton stopped Liam Conroy last June in his first fight since falling to Ricards Bolotniks in the Golden Contract tournament, while Azeez made his second successful defense in April with a split decision over Ricky Summers.

At 168, Lennox Clarke (20-1-1, 8 KO) will look to build off his knockout of Willy Hutchinson in a voluntary defense against Zak Chelli (10-1-1, 5 KO).

At 154, Anthony Fowler (15-1, 12 KO) has declined to meet Hamzah Sheeraz (13-0, 9 KO) in a final eliminator.

At 147, Ekow Essuman (15-0, 6 KO) will make his inaugural defense against Danny Ball (10-0-1, 4 KO) after claiming the belt last month.

The most interesting development, however, comes at 118, where they’ve scheduled a purse bid for champion Lee McGregor’s (11-0, 9 KO) rematch with Kash Farooq (15-1, 6 KO). McGregor defeated then-champion Farooq by questionable decision in 2019 and has since knocked out three challengers, including Karim Guerfi in just 2:43. Farooq is 2-0 in that span and is set for a stay-busy fight on this Saturday’s Buatsi-Bolotniks Fight Camp card.
