IT’S not the welterweight fight we want to see happen but it’s preferable to most of the ‘fights’ we are seeing taking place in boxing today.
The fight in question is Terence Crawford vs. Shawn Porter, which, according to promoter Bob Arum, could be announced officially as early as next week. That seems as good as it’s going to get in the welterweight division at the moment, what with Errol Spence, Crawford’s primary rival, out injured for a while, and is considerably better than most other fights being passed off as ‘boxing’ in 2021.
“We talked with PBC as late as yesterday,” Arum told ESNEWS. “It looks like Porter is on board, or close to on board.
“Hopefully Terence will be on board and we’ll announce the fight next week, hopefully.
“We want it in Vegas at the Mandalay Bay. We’re holding the arena for November 20.”
Should the fight happen as expected on November 20, it will mark almost a year since WBO titleholder Crawford last boxed (when stopping Kell Brook inside four rounds). Porter, meanwhile, has been out for even longer has not seen any ring action at all since defeating Sebastian Formella over 12 rounds in August 2020.
It’s not the best fight that can be made at 147, and it should have probably happened sooner, but it will have to do.
