Pick It: TBRB #1 David Benavidez vs. Kyrone Davis (Saturday, Showtime, 9:00 PM EST)
24-year old former super middleweight titlist David Benavidez (24-0, 21 KO) is in the main event and the comparison shopping is inevitable.
On the same night Showtime airs the replay of last weekend’s Saul Alvarez-Caleb Plant unification bout, Benavidez will tackle 27-year old Kyrone Davis (16-2-1, 6 KO) in the main event. Benavidez could be in line for a shot at the WBC belt sooner than later and that means the chance of a lifetime to face Alvarez. Can Davis throw everything into disarray?
Additional Show to Watch For
Saturday – #3 Galahad vs. Martinez (DAZN, 2:00 PM EST)
28-year old IBF featherweight titlist Kid Galahad (28-1, 17 KO) gets his first defense against a name that used to mean more. 35-year old Kiko Martinez (42-10-2, 29 KO) being in a title fight in 2021 is questionable. His last chance was a five round drubbing versus Gary Russell in 2019 but Martinez continues to hang around. Galahad has talent and should have a good showing here before looking for bigger game next year.
Saturday – #4 (160) Munguia vs. #9 (168) Rosado (DAZN, 9:00 PM EST)
Don’t be surprised if this ends up being the weekend gem. Stakes aren’t as immediate as the Showtime show, but 25-year old former Jr. middleweight titlist Jaime Munguia (37-0, 30 KO) isn’t far from bigger chances at middleweight. Munguia faces a veteran in the midst of a bit of a renaissance. 35-year old Gabe Rosado (26-13-1, 15 KO) was unlucky to lose a decision to former middleweight titlist Daniel Jacobs and followed the narrow loss with an off the floor knockout of undefeated Bektemir Melikuziev. Is Munguia his hat trick of mid-30s surprises?
