According to veteran trainer Dominic Ingle, former two division champion Billy Joe Saunders is finally back in training with a potential ring return being positioned for the month of December.
Saunders, 32-years-old, has been out of the ring since May of 2021 – when he suffered the first defeat of his career at the hands of Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez. Saunders did well in the fight, but Canelo eventually broke his orbital bone and the British fighter was unable to continue.
For more than a year, Saunders has kept a pretty low profile and some felt that he might retire from the sport.
Ingle trained Saunders from 2017 to 2019. He says the boxer has now returned to his gym and wants to fight again before the year is out.
“He came back a couple of weeks back just to find his feet, get away from home. He’s aiming to fight in December. His nutritionist Greg Marriott is based in Sheffield, we have just got to sit down and work out a plan of where he goes from there. That’s another conversation I need to have when I get back to Sheffield. It might work out, it might not,” Ingle told The Sheffield Star.
The Star indicates that Saunders’ representatives were contacted to confirm the quotes from Ingle, but they insisted the fighter is “currently retired and not returning to boxing”.
