The first and only four division world champion in the history of Nicaraguan boxing, Roman ‘Chocolatito’ Gonzalez, has revealed that the rematch with two-time world champion Juan Francisco ‘Gallo’ Estrada is practically “80 or 90 percent” at the finish line – provided both of them come away with their hands up in their respective fights on October 23 in Mexico City.
Román will defend the super flyweight title of the World Boxing Association against the Israel ‘Jiga’ González in the Mexican capital, while Juan Francisco will put the World Boxing Council’s super flyweight title at risk against former champion Carlos Cuadras.
If both champions win, then they would face off next year.
“Almost everything is already finalized (for a rematch with Estrada), some details are missing, but 80-90% of the items are already detailed for that fight. It’s going to be a real good fight. In the end that is the fight that we are both waiting for in order to secure good money and we will see what happens,” Gonzalez told ESPN Deportes.
A rematch between ‘Chocolatito’ and Estrada has been talked about for years, since they first collided in November 2012, when the Nicaraguan took a points victory after twelve round of action at junior flyweight.
However, Román (49-2, 41 KOs) does not want to overlook the task at hand.
“There are many plans, but in the end we know that that plans could fall through. I am focused on this fight. Win this fight and good things will come. Israel González is not an easy opponent, we are not going to belittle anyone. We hope to get out of this well and see what can happen along the way and if the fight Estrada, that we’ve longed for, will happen,” Gonzalez said.
“I am better prepared than when I faced [Kal] Yafai. I stayed in the gym and took better care of myself. I have been preparing for this fight for three and a half months, I feel very strong and I feel like I’m going with everything. At this moment it is difficult for someone to really beat me, I feel very strong. I am confident in the condition that I have and that is what motivates me to give more desire to the world of boxing,” Gonzalez said.
