Francisco Santana retires after knockout loss to Lopez

Fighting

15 years after starting his pro career with a 104-second knockout, all-action welterweight veteran Francisco Santana has announced his retirement at the age of 34.

“Chia” faced a who’s who of welterweight and super welterweight talent throughout his career, starting with a split decision loss to Karim Mayfield in 2008. He would go on to share the ring with Julian Williams, Jermell Charlo, Sadam Ali, Jose Benavidez Jr., Felix Diaz (whom he managed to upset), Abel Ramos, Jarrett Hurd, and finally Josesito Lopez last weekend.

Said Lopez fight saw Santana take serious punishment, which ref Neal Young seemed happy to prolong. He ends his career 25-9-1 with 12 KOs.

Santana took on whoever they put in front of him and fought his ass off, which is all we as fans can possibly ask. We wish him the best in whatever avenue he decides to explore next. Thanks for the violence, “Chia.”
