WBC, WBA super middleweight champion Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez believes that he would batter Gennadiy Golovkin if they meet in a third meeting.
Canelo was in action last month, in what was his only fight of 2020, when he dominated unbeaten Callum Smith to capture two world titles in Texas.
Canelo (54-1-2, 36 KOs) is now looking ahead to a mandatory defense, possibly on February 27th in Mexico, against Avni Yildirim.
Should Canelo win, he will stage fights in May and September.
One of the frontrunners to face Canelo in 2021 – is IBF middleweight champion Gennadiy Golovkin (41-1-1, 36 KOs).
They fought twice in the past – with both contests being close and competitive.
The first time around, in September 2017, the bout ended in a controversial twelve round split draw. They met again a year later, Canelo won a close twelve round majority decision.
If they meet for the trilogy fight, Canelo empathizes that Golovkin would have to move up to 168-pounds – and there won’t be any negotiations when it comes to the agreed-upon weight.
However, Canelo warns that at this point in their respective careers he would likely do a real number on the 38-year-old Golovkin.
“I don’t have to prove anything to anyone, I did my job already by beating him twice and right now, I want to stay at 168, and if (GGG) wants to move up, we’ll see what happens, if that’s what the fans really want. I’m at 168 and I don’t have to do any favors for anyone. I’m at 168 and our goal is to unify here,” Canelo told The Ring.
“I feel good right now, I feel strong. I feel like I’m at my peak and I continue working hard. If a fight happens a third time (with GGG), I feel so good that I could I most likely knock him out and do some serious damage.”
