The World Boxing Council has made a decision to add a picture of Floyd Mayweather to all of their world titles belts.
Mayweather won the WBCworld title in five weight divisions – super featherweight, lightweight, super lightweight, welterweight and super welterweight.
He also won a variety special titles from the WBC – like the ‘money’ belt and the ‘diamond’ title.
Mayweather retired from the sport in August of 2017, with a tenth round stoppage of UFC superstar Conor McGregor in ten rounds at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
He walked away from the sport with a perfect record of 50-0, with 27 of those wins by knockout.
Mayweather was overjoyed with the WBC’s decision to add his picture to all of their world title belts.
“I’m honored to have the WBC include my likeness on their green and gold belts for eternity,” said Mayweather.
“I remember the first time I won a WBC belt and saw the photos of the great champions on there and always wanted to be there too. It really is a dream come true for me to be alongside the great Ali , and WBC founder Don Jose, and to be recognized by them for my contributions to the organization and the sport. I am beyond grateful to receive this honor.”
Mayweather’s captured his first WBC title, at 130-pounds, with a victory over Genaro “Chicanito” Hernandez, who`s corner stopped the fight after eight rounds. In 2011, following a tremendously courageous battle against cancer, Hernandez passed away – and it was Mayweather who paid for his funeral.
Mayweather joins Muhammad Ali and the late former WBC President Jose Sulaiman, as the constant images that will appear on each WBC world title belt.
The World Boxing Council was founded in Mexico City on February 14th 1963, and initially developed a black satin belt with a silver center plate, during that decade.
