British boxing is back in the ring after January’s shutdown, and Leigh Wood has given us an early year highlight, knocking out Reece Mould in nasty fashion to win the vacant British featherweight title.
The end came in the ninth round of what had been a gritty, tough fight from both men, with Wood (24-3, 14 KO) bouncing back from his loss a year ago to Jazza Dickens to secure one of the bigger wins of his career in terms of title achievement and all that.
Mould (13-1, 6 KO) had some success early, but was dropped in the fourth and then finished in the ninth on two hard knockdowns:
Wood, 32, is maybe eyeing a rematch now with Jazza Dickens, who will face Kid Galahad for the vacant IBF featherweight title at some point. Working with new trainer Ben Davison, Wood said ahead of this fight that he was fully confident it wouldn’t go the distance. It did not.
