WBC lightweight champion Devin Haney may be currently scheduled to face Jorge Linares next month, but he was really hoping for an even bigger fight against rising star Ryan Garcia. But despite publicly expressing his interest in a fight against Garcia, Garcia and his team instead opted to face Javier Fortuna — something Haney explicitly calls a duck.
“He didn’t want to fight Tank (Davis). He didn’t want to fight Manny Pacquiao. It was just it was all promotion.“And only time will tell what’s going on, and as everyone can see that he’s ducking me. Why fight for another mandatory when you could be fighting for a world title?”
So with Garcia off the table as a Haney opponent for the time being, Haney turns his attention to Linares, saying it’s a legitimate 50/50 fight that some fans believe Linares can actually win. Because of that Haney says he wants to take this opportunity to show the world what he can really do.
Haney will, of course, get that very chance when he and Linares duke it out on May 29 in Las Vegas, airing live on DAZN.
