Castro tests positive for COVID, out of Aug. 15 pro debut

Recent Matchroom signing Marc Castro’s Saturday pro debut has been canceled after the elite amateur and his father/trainer tested positive for the coronavirus. It is the second August 15th bout to fall through, following in the footsteps of original main event Julio Cesar Martinez vs. McWilliams Arroyo.

“We are all extremely disappointed for Marc that his debut has been postponed following his positive test for COVID-19,” Matchroom’s chief medical officer Dr. Rod Ballelos said in a press release. “Marc and his father will now be under strict quarantine and plans are being made to ensure the safety of everyone still involved in the event, as well as to not expose the community and contribute to this already devastating pandemic.”

Castro, whose list of accomplishments is almost cartoonishly long, signed with Matchroom in February after withdrawing from the Olympic Trials with illness. The 20-year-old looks to have massive potential, but he’ll have to wait a little longer to show it.

Alongside the main event between Cecilia Braekhus and Jessica McCaskill, the DAZN card also features Uzbek standouts Israil Madrimov and Shakhram Giyasov in separate bouts, plus the latest from fellow prospects Nikita Abibiy and Raymond Ford.
