Benn plans July return, then interim title fight before year’s end

Conor Benn isn’t planning on taking a victory lap after his most impressive victory to date. “The Destroyer” recently sat down with iFL TV to discuss his plans for the rest of 2021, which include a “step up” in July and an interim title bout by the end of the year.

He doesn’t say which interim title, but the WBA one is currently empty, and you know Gilberto Mendoza abhors a vacuum.

“July, that’s what we’re aiming for,” said Conor Benn to iFL TV about his next fight. “I’m going out to America for a training camp, and we’ll see what happens. Yeah, definitely in July. I’d like to have two more fights before the years up, for sure.”

Legendary father Nigel has some grand ambitions for his son.

“Yeah, he [Nigel] wants the fight with Porter. Yes, it’s funny, he definitely wants the Porter fight.”

Five months before Benn (18-0, 12 KO) took just 80 seconds to run over Samuel Vargas, he handily dominated Porter’s most recent foe in Sebastian Formella. That’s far, far from an indication that he’s ready for “Showtime,” but there’s a marketing angle at least.

As far as more feasible foes, David Avanesyan sits above Benn in the WBA rankings and works with Matchroom, though Eddie Hearn’s probably not too keen on risking another prospect after the thrashing Avanesyan gave Josh Kelly. The winner of Abel Ramos vs. Omar Figueroa Jr. would make for a banger of a fight and both of them are also above him in the rankings, but they’re with PBC. Anyone spring to mind?
