Boxing Scene

Bridgerweights Big Joe Tambwe Djeko (17-3-1) and Devin Vargas (22-7) clash for the vacant WBC International Silver title in what is now the main event for Only O1ne Boxing Managements second All Eyez on Brussels show.

The show goes ahead August 29 but will be without Swedish light heavyweight Oscar Ahlin, who had to pull out due to a variety of reasons.

Hungarian New School Promotions makes another attempt to get a show off the ground on September 3 in Budapest and again it’s with super welterweight Balasz Bacskai (14-0) headlining and he takes on experienced Argentinian Guido Nicolas Pitto (27-8-2). Pitto resides in Spain and has some good wins but is 3-3-1 since 2018.

This show is New School’s first of the year and it is of course COVID-19 that has stopped previous events from going ahead.

Samir Ziani’s defense of the EBU super featherweight title against mandatory challenger Faroukh Kourbanov will go ahead in Belgium in the fall with site and date to be announced.

Belgian GMG Charatte won purse bids with an offer for 20 000 Euro.

The winner of Ziani (32-3-1) vs Kourbanov (18-3) will have Spaniard John Carter (13-0-1) as official challenger. Carter vs Ziani was on for a fight next weekend but Carter had to withdraw due to an injury.

Ziani beat Kourbanov in 2019 and is ranked # 8 by the WBC and # 9 by the IBF.

Heavyweight Zhan Kossobutskiy (15-0) is co-promoted by Universum and Frank Warren’s Queensberry Promotion and headlines Universum’s big gym show August 21. Opponent is American Joey Dawejko (21-8-4).

Kossobutskiy has scored some big knockouts but Dawejko might be able to take him a few rounds and test his stamina and ability to fight hard down the stretch.
