Top 10 cruiserweight marks time with quick win, writes Eric Armit as he scans the rings around the world

AUGUST 27

CUERNAVACA, MEXICO

Canadian super-lightweight STEVE CLAGGETT, 30-7-2 (20), stopped Mexican EMANUEL LOPEZ, 30-14-1 (5), in four rounds. Clagget had Lopez hurt in each of the first three rounds and when he floored Lopez with a left to the head in the fourth the referee immediately stopped the fight.

SAN PEDRO, ARGENTINA

The Argentinian middleweight title changed hands as GERARDO VERGARA, 14-0 (8), halted champion EMILIANO PUCHETA, 14-5 (4), in the ninth round. Vergara dropped Pucheta in second and landed a series of punches in the ninth that forced the stoppage.

PLANT CITY, USA

In an entertaining clash of seasoned Mexican featherweight battlers CESAR JUAREZ, 27-10 (20), took the unanimous decision over DENNIS CONTRERAS, 24-11-1(22). The harder punching of Juarez gave him the edge but even then he needed a strong finish to get the win on scores of 96-94 twice and 97-93. Unbeaten heavyweight STEPHAN SHAW, 15-0,1NC (11), obliterated NICK DAVIS 6-3 (4) putting him down and out with a left hook after just 102 seconds. Shaw is managed by David McWater.

JUAREZ, MEXICO

In a typical MIGUEL ROMAN, 63-14 (48), performance the super veteran battered SERGIO PUENTE, 28-12 (12), to the canvas in the third and again in the fourth with the referee stopping the fight after the second knockdown.

MEXICO CITY, MEXICO

Colombian JOSE SANMARTIN, 32-5-1(20), takes a unanimous decision over Mexican DAVID CARMONA, 22-9-5 (9), in a super-bantamweight contest. Carmona started well but Sanmartin scored knockdowns in the fourth and fifth rounds and then handed put a steady beating to Carmon from there winning on scores of 98-90, 97-91 and 97-92. Sanmartin has won 12 of his last 13 fights. Carmona went the distance with Naoya Inoue but was stopped in seven rounds by Khalid Yafai.

AUGUST 28

MRAGOWO, POLAND

Eighth-ranked cruiserweight MATEUSZ MASTERNAK, 45-5 (30), knocked out over matched FELIPE NSUE, 4-2, with a right to the head in the third round. At super-middleweight,

KAMIL BEDNAREK, 9-0 (5), floored Argentinian JAVIER MACIEL, 33-14 (23), with a left hook in the seventh on the way to a points win on scores of 78-73 twice and 79-72 and unbeaten super-welterweight PRZEMYSLAW ZYSK, 17-0 (6), floored Nicaraguan DAVID BENCY, 14-24-1 (4), in the third and Bency pulled out of the fight in the sixth claiming an injury.

BRANDSEN, ARGENTINA

Southpaw CLAUDI DANEFF, 12-2-1 (8), won the Argentinian lightweight title with points victory over defending title holder JUAN de LEON, 13-4 (4), with the judges scoring it 98-90 twice and 98 ½ -90 for Daneff. De Leon was down in the second and lost a point in the fourth for a punch to the back of Daneff’s head.

VIENNA, AUSTRIA

Russian-born light heavyweight MANSUR ELSAEV, 14-0 (12), had to climb off the floor to beat Bulgarian YOSKO STOYCHEV, 13-1 (9). A right from Stoychev put Elsaev down in the first but he survived and systematically beat the resistance out of Stoychev before the Bulgarian slumped to the canvas in the sixth and the fight was stopped.

MONTREAL, CANADA

Local light-flyweight KIM CLAVEL, 14-0 (2), gets another win as she decisions Mexican MARIA VARGAS, 15-4-1, over 10 rounds. The relentless pressure from Clavel proved too much for Vargas who faded out of the fight after three rounds. Clavel won 99-91 twice and 98-92 on the card. MIKAEL ZEWSKI, 35-2 (23), moved up to super-welterweight and also faced Mexican opposition but had to work hard to outpoint DILAN LOZA on scores of Scores 78-73, 78-74 and 77-74.

LOIR-ET-CHER, FRANCE

Spanish light-flyweight JOANA SUAREZ, 6-1-1 (1), collected the vacant European Female light-flyweight title with points victory of France’s MARIE CONNAN, 4-1. In a close fight knockdowns scored by Suarez in the second and fourth round proved decisive as she took the majority decision at 96-93 and 95-93 in her favour and 94-94. Connan works as a language teacher in England.

FRIBOURG, SWITZERLAND

In another fight for a vacant European Female title, this one at welterweight, Belgian OSHIN DERIEUW, 14-0 (5), won a close unanimous verdict over Switzerland’s OLIVIA BELKACEM, 10-2 (1), on scores of 96-94 twice and 97-93.

ZHUKOVKA, RUSSIA

A minor upset as GASAN GASANOV, 18-9-1 (14), knocks out previously unbeaten light-heavyweight, YUSUS KEDIEV 8-1-1 (6). One booming right put Kediev out cold in the first round.

HERMOSILLO, MEXICO

Super-lightweight PEDRO CAMPA, 33-1-1 (22), halted novice ABIMAEL CRUZ, 5-1 (5), in six rounds. A clash of heads saw a swelling almost closing Campa’s right eye in the first round. Cruz was competitive until body punches weakened him from the third and with his own right eye nearly closed Cruz was saved by the referee in the sixth.
