Eddie Hearn, promoter for heavyweight contender Dillian Whyte, expects his fighter to get a mandatory crack at the winner of the upcoming trilogy fight between Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder, who battle for the WBC world title on October 9th at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
The mandatory scenario will depend on Whyte being victorious on October 30, when he faces Otto Wallin.
Anthony Joshua had hoped to face the Fury-Wilder winner in a full division unification in the early part of 2022.
But, Joshua suffered a decision loss to Oleksand Usyk last Saturday night at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The Ukrainian fighter walked away with the WBO, IBO, IBF, WBA titles.
Joshua will now face Usyk in a contracted rematch in the first quarter of next year.
While Joshua and Usyk handle their business, Hearn is hoping the WBC orders the Fury-Wilder winner to face Whyte, who holds the sanctioning organization’s interim-title.
“As long as Dillian beats Otto Wallin, then Whyte is mandatory for the winner of that fight immediately. There is no reason not to do it. Dillian, who 100 percent would have wanted AJ to win, because he’s not like that,” Hearn told IFL TV.
“He now sits there as probably a cast-iron mandatory challenger to the winner of Wilder-Fury. So now, while you’re waiting for the undisputed fight, which, if it does happen, will probably happen next summer. The winner of Wilder-Fury will probably fight the winner of Whyte-Wallin because they will have to because the mandatory will be called.
“It’s a really interesting situation. Anything can happen. In an ideal world, Tyson Fury beats Deontay Wilder, the mandatory is called for Dillian Whyte. Dillian Whyte beats Tyson Fury, AJ beats Usyk, and then we got Whyte against AJ for the undisputed next summer.”
